Dear Chris I get bowel obstructions quite regularly and was told never bend over as you can pinch the bowel and lay down and rest as much as possible because when you are standing the bowel tends to fall down and outwards which can cause it to strangle. When I start to swell I recline in my chairand rest(which is most afternoons).I also have to avoid all seedy things and nuts and heavy food(like meat and bread). And no excessive walking. When they fall forward they drag on the adhesions and it hurts like hell.
