Helen, personally I've been doing this asana for nearly 2 years. Udiyanna bandha is a classic asana and described even in every book on yoga for beginners. But even experts do it's advanced variant - nauli. Asana - is the name of so-called 'static' exercises in khatha-yoga. Some asanas are quite hard to do but lots of them are very simple and suitable for beginners too. Here I'd like to note that yoga itself is not the system for health recovering or maintenance! Although there are many rules of nutrition, clearance procedures, physical and breathing exercises, psycho-techniques in every branch of yoga, the aim of yogi is not health itself. Health is a 'side effect' there. :) So when someone takes any thing from such large system as yoga he must realize that in yoga it's interlinked with other elements. He also must clearly understand how it would doing as a distinct thing. As for details of above-mentioned asana(exercise) I can tell you it could seem very like a kegel exercise but with extra effect (as I think). This asana has the advantage of kegel exercise - it not just strengthens the pelvic muscles but also massages thoroughly ALL abdominal organs(!) and even the heart (if you're skilled enough) :) :)

Here simplified description of Udiyanna bandha.

1. Stand straight. 2. Lean forward a little and put your hands on knees or waist. 3. Breathe in slowly with your stomach. 4. Breathe out slowly with your stomach too. 5. Hold your breath. 6. Pull your abdomen wall in inside and above. 7. Then push it down. Repeat 2-5 times while holding breath. Rest 15-30 sec. Total 5-15 cycles.

You can also include perineum muscle into work like during kegel exercise, but instead contracting your muscles try to 'pull' them inside. It's very similar to usual contraction. Do the asana 20-40 mins before eating or 2-4 hours after eating (your stomach must be empty). If you do it before breakfast then take a glass or two of water slowly and do the asana in 5-10 mins. If someone needs pictures of the asana I'll scan it and send it to you.

In my opinion this exercise is absolutely necessary for all adhesions sufferers since they have all or partial rigid abdominal wall muscles. The asana could help remove those cramps and spasms.

Best regards, Igor Gudymenko
