[] Symptoms and the Diagnostic Process: SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

In medical terms, a sign is any visible indication of disease; for example, inflammation, swelling, bleeding, a rash or other change in skin color. A symptom is something you experience or feel such as pain, dizziness, nausea, fever, or general malaise. Be prepared to give an accurate and complete description of any sign or symptom, regardless of whether it seems trivial or unrelated to your major complaint. It's also vital to be as open and honest as possible. Although your doctor will ask questions, don't expect that he or she will stumble on what is truly worrying you. Many people are reluctant to talk about the intimate details of their lives, especially to a doctor or other health professional. Even if you find such openness embarrassing or difficult, try to overcome any reticence. When describing your own symptoms, give as much detail as possible (see box above).

The following box lists common signs and symptoms, their possible causes, and tests or procedures that may be indicated by their presence.
