Anesthesia & Oxycontin

I've been taking oxycontin for two years as a result of a wedge fracture of the fourth lumbar vertebra, a completely sundered SI joint, and various other fractures.

I may need thoracic surgery in the near future, and I've heard at least one story about someone being told that oxycontin use must be stopped prior to undergoing general anesthesia.

This story has filled me with fear and loathing.

I'm certain I could not survive a cold-turkey cessation of oxcontin.

Is it really necessary to stop taking oxycontin or like pain medication prior to general anesthesia?
