Gallbladder attack....when is it good to seek medical advice?

Hi folks...I'm new here.

I'm 23....and didn't consider myself to have alot of health problems (other than being gluten intolerant). I woke up at 4 this morning with a severe pain under the middle of my ribcage that radiated to my back. I thought a shower could help ease the pain (first thought it was muscle pain) but it didn't work. I woke my mom up to explain my symptoms...and she immediately said it was a gallbladder attack (my first one). It runs in my family on both sides...and most of the folks that have had it eventually had their gallbladder taken out. It was excruciatingly painful (worse than gluten intolerance or my recent tonsilectomy). I'm glad it only lasted a little over an hour... but I'm still experiencing pain after the fact.I'm wondering if you have an attack if you should immediately contact a doctor or what? I see a GI (gastro intestinal) specialist on occasion....should I head his way? I'm wondering if gallstone attacks warrant immediate attention (like an appendicitis) or are most folks ok?
