CAUDAL BLOCK
The caudal block is another type of epidural block which goes through the caudal canal. The patient is placed in the prone position and we put 1-2 pillows under his/her pelvis to elevate the sacrum. Then the anesthesiologist numbs the skin with a 30 gauge needle. The nerve block needle is inserted into the caudal canal. Then we inject a local anesthetic mixed with the corticosteroid Depo Medrol. Trained nurses will monitor blood pressure and O2 saturation.
The purpose of blocks is to bathe nerve root area with corticosteroid to decrease swelling.
It's basically a variation of an epidural.
