Christy about mesh....

Hi Christy,

You poor thing!  You really have been sold a barrel full of salt herring haven't you!  Firstly you need to know that mesh isn't used for the purpose of stopping adhesions forming.  I have mesh across my abdomen above my pubic bone, where I have had that one incision line opened up SEVEN times.  After my hystorectomy, which as a nightmare half of my bowel pushed through the muscle wall and all of the internal stitching across the would was being forced open.

I was rushed back into surgery to repair this huge mess, my bowel was put back into place and mesh was used to reinforce my muscle wall which had basically calapsed.  The mesh allows the scar tissue to grow through and around it to form a strong bond to hold everything in where it should be!  Mesh is not for the purpose of halting the regrowth of adhesions.  The mesh actually becomes a part of your body tissue as it is completely surounded by new tissue.

An adhesion barrier is a substance that is used a bit like glad wrap to surround an area or an organ to discourage the regrowth of adhesions.  Since it can take anywhere from 24 hours to 7 days for adhesions to form, the barrier is an organic material that gradually breaks down and then is absorbed by body fluids and expelled.  Some barriers a a filmy substance while there is also a gel and a spray being tested in some countries and already used in Europe.

I really think you need to start reading all the information available on the IAS site, because you are in charge of your body and treatment and you need to be properly informed to make the best decision for your future health and happiness.

Love & hugs

Jo (Australia)
