Hi Lin

You have just made a very important point, I sometimes feel a bit frustrated that information like this seems to be available to America's citizens, but it doesn't seem to be easy to find this information in our countries (New Zealand & Australia).  I know some of my rights as a patient in the public hospital system within Australia, but I'm not sure what they would be in New Zealand.

I will look in to it for both of us....because you are right, we need to know how & when we can assert our rights as citizens of our country, but also our rights regarding duty of care within the medical system.

If you happen to find some information before I get back to you, could you please let me know.  Our countries are pretty similar in lots of ways, so it's possible our constitutions & healthcare laws etc could be similar also.

Love & gentle cool hugs

Jo

>What I have wanted to find out is "what are my rights as a chronic pain patient - in regards to pain medication, etc, here in NZ?" - I have thought of asking the Human Rights Commissioner - if I can find the site on the internet... numerous times I have tried to find out what my rights are within NZ laws - especially when I've been in hospital - but people have always either ignored my questions, or avoided answering by changing the subject.

>I have been reading all of you mentioning that in the USA you've got rights, where could I find that kind of information for New Zealand? Does anybody have any suggestions.

>I am afraid that I am heading for a serious conflict with my pain specialist - especially if I have to be hospitalised in the future - and it would help if I knew where I stood legally - I am really afraid that if I should be hospitalised and he finds out how much, and how often I take morphine sulphate - that he will change me back to methadone - and will demand I obey his directions.
