Unfortunately, there is another virus making the rounds on the
Internet. We are already blocking this virus at the server level
for e-mail, but some may have slipped through before the block
was established. "You may also become affected via ICQ and/or MIRC
chat, which we cannot block".
-- -----------GONER VIRUS
OPERATING SYSTEMS AFFECTED:
WINDOWS 95, 98 & ME, and possibly other Windows versions,
such as 2000 and XP. Macintosh NOT affected.
DESCRIPTION:
There is a new virus in the "wild" that was identified yesterday named
W32.Goner.A@mm, or just "Goner." This one is a mass-mailing worm that is
written in Visual Basic.
The virus comes through as an attachment called "Gone.scr." The subject of
the message is "Hi" and the body of the message says:
"How are you? When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about
you. I am in a hurry, I promise you will love it!"
When the attachment is clicked, you will get a little window with a
greeting for you. The virus then sends itself to everyone in your Address
Book. The virus will then attempt to delete any antivirus programs and
firewall programs on your computer and also attempts to delete essential
Windows\System files.
Finally, the virus will spread to others through an ICQ network and a
MIRC connection, if those programs are present on your computer. This
virus will only infect your computer if the attachment is opened.
This means that you can safely click on the message itself and delete it.
