Hi Gina,
I learned about atonic colon a few years back when I was working for an
Gi specialist. The test they do to diagnose it - the patient swallose a
capsule with radiographic rings and they take abdominal x-rays at
certain intervals to see how long it takes for them to pass through the
small and large intestine. Anyhing above 3 days is considered abnormal.
My surgeon told me that there are many patients that complain of severe
constipation that end up being dagnosed with atonic colon and have their
lg intestine removed because of it. (They usuually don't have any pain
with BMS either - their main compliant is bloating.)
Based on what your bowel habits are - you certainly could have the
problem as well. A surgeon would probably be more concerned with >week
bms than your regualr MD. A GI doc would probably be more concerned
about it as well. AT least mine was. Because of my history with
obstructions my docs don't want me going any longer than 3 days between
bms. If you ever obstruct - it will become more of a concern as well.
I hope this helps and hasn't been confusing. If you need anything else
please let me know.
I hope you are well -
Tina
