I think that a lot of us are in a rather unique position to appreciate the perils of both the 20th century doctor and the 21st. Yes there are people here who've never had an unnecessary operation -- but there are also plenty of people here who are in really bad shape after unnecessary surgery.

Or a different way to state it -- how many countless women are there out in America who do NOT have adhesions, because modern managed care doesn't just pay for anything without question that a doctor says is medically necessary? The dirty little secret about some 20th century docs is that "medically necessity" includes when the "medical" doctor has the "necessity" of making a payment on his sports car...

One of the advantages of a healthy distrust is that you are not so devastated when your trust gets abused.

With the controls place on doctors by government insurance programs (Medicare, HMOs, etc.) - doctors are being told how they should do their job and all sorts of restrictions have been placed on them - especially in the case of the medical insurance programs!!
