There are problems with the CA-125 test for ovarian cancer if you're premenopausal. A number of noncancerous conditions—such as uterine fibroids and endometriosis—can cause the CA-125 level to rise in women who are still menstruating.

We need a better testing method. Fortunatley, researchers are working on it. An associate professor of radiology from Alabama has developed a way to program the gene that makes certain marine jellyfish glow green to glow only when introduced to ovarian cancer cells. The glow is bright enough to be detected by a special ultrasound or probe used during a pelvic exam. The researcher predicts the test may be available in the next five years. By that time it won't do be much good because I will most likely be menopausal! But I'm glad that a better test is on the horizon.
