Dear Susan, The only danger I had ever been warned of regarding colonoscopy is that the scope could possibly tear the bowel, and cause a need for immediate surgery. But they say this very rarely happens. You could possibly have very slight bleeding afterward, especially if a polyp is removed. There is a test called a 'virtual colonoscopy' in which a small capsule containing a tiny camera, is swallowed. The camera takes photos of the bowel as capsule passes through the bowel. The only problem I was warned of concerning a barium swallow, or a barium enema, is that you need to get the barium to pass through your system, as the barium can harden and severely constipate you. Been there... had that... been very constipated, as they said I have a slow-moving colon. Hope this helps. Millie.
