Karla, I'm making my way through this 14-page opus on thrush, and 2
things...
First of all, gentian violet can cause mouth ulcers (canker sores) and
that may be why they don't want you to use it. Or maybe it's because
there is a minimal amount of alcohol in it -- I'm not sure if that
minimal amount is safe when you are taking opiates. If they are
terribly worried about any alcohol at all then they really need to knock
out the yeast. Because yeast metabolism consists in taking in sugar and
outputing alcohol. If they are that worried about alcohol, then they
had better figure out how to shut down that brewery the yeast critters
are running in your mouth and throat!
"He said that if it isn't responding to the Nystatin...double dose, then
maybe it isn't thrush."
This is the thrush variation on "I did an adhesiolysis on you and cut
all of the adhesions, so if you are still in pain it must be something
else." Thrush is a nasty, nasty critter that is extraordinarily hard to
kill. The yeasty beasties that hang out in hospitals (where you picked
this up) are the nastiest of the nasties. All that it means when the
nystatin doesn't work is that you don't happen to have one of the wimpy
strains of thrush!
Have you been on diflucan yet?
One of the other tips I have gotten is that when you find a treatment
that works you need to continue using it for seven days past the point
when all of the symptoms stop.

He had just seen his last patient of the day and I had an appointment with the urologist so I couldn't get in today. He said that if it isn't responding to the Nystatin...double dose, then maybe it isn't thrush. I showed the urologist and he said it looked like thrush to him. My urologist is quite concerned about my nutritional status...says I am malnourished. Even after losing the more than 30 pounds in the hospital I am still overweight. I think it all came off my face, my chest and my legs. I'm not overly dehydrated yet...at least my electrolytes aren't too far off. He did say that he was on call all weekend and that all I needed to do is call and he would have me readmitted if nothing else for rehydration. He also stated that perhaps my pcp would give me fluids in my visit to his office tomorrow. I will get through this. For some reason they don't want to use the purple stuff...I asked and he said no..
