New CME Article Available
Neck and Shoulder Pain with Special Emphasis on Pharmacotherapy
Bernard M. Abrams, M.D.
Musculoskeletal pain compromises a large portion of neck and shoulder
derangements. These disorders affect one in four Americans and cost billions
of dollars each year. These conditions drastically diminish the quality of
life of millions of people. Musculoskeletal pain management, and
particularly neck and shoulder pain is challenging because of diverse
etiologies. Almost 50% of physicians rate their pain management as poor. New
JCAHO pain management standards mandate increased emphasis on adequate pain
treatment of ALL patients. Accordingly, there is a great need to address
this physician training shortfall with educational activities and
informational materials that will update practitioners on the treatment of
the various disorders associated with musculoskeletal pain. In this
monograph we address the pharmacotherapy of neck and shoulder pain because
it is one of the common clinical problems presenting in the ambulatory
setting. Additionally, neck and shoulder pain is responsible for a large
portion of all disability expenditure in the United States. This article
presents the goals for management of acute and chronic neck and shoulder
pain, while conferring the various types of pharmacotherapy available for
neck and shoulder pain: including skeletal muscle relaxants, nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory agents, antidepressants and opioids. This activity is
intended for primary care physicians and other healthcare providers involved
with the treatment of musculoskeletal pain.
Featured Category of Pain
Last month Pain.com is featured the Arthritis Pain Category. This section
highlights resources for both the consumer and healthcare professional. Both
will find the extensive glossary helpful in communicating about the issues
that arthritis presents. The rich resource section provides the user with
information on societies and foundations that are dedicated to the many
aspects of arthritis, as well the latest in clinical trial listings. The
arthritis sufferer and the caregiver alike can benefit from giving and
gaining encouragement, information, and enlightenment that is available
through participating in the support groups. Practical day-to-day tips are
also available in the Facts About Arthritis Section. Healthcare
Professionals can glean from the professional resources and links to
professional journals and publications. The CME activity provides AMA PRA
category 1 credit, and the monthly-featured abstract helps keep you abreast
of the latest information available.
This month Pain.com will feature the Breakthrough Pain Category. The BTP
section will feature two outstanding abstracts: James F. Cleary MB, BS,
FRACP authored the informative abstract entitled "Pharmacokinetic and
Pharmacodynamic Issues in the Treatment of Breakthrough Pain, and Russell
Portney MD's insightful abstract, "Breakthrough Pain: Characteristics and
Impact in Patients with Cancer Pain". The Breakthrough Pain Library allows
the user to type in a term or word and gain full access to the extensive
Pain.com library. Expert's Roundtable
