Sue,

A "tens" unit sends small electrical impulses to the area of pain. The PT explained this gives you immediate relief because it releases endorphins blocking the pain and it can last for a while afterward, in my case three hours. It works for some people she said and for others not so great. Since I have a referral from my doctor I may not have to pay anything through my HMO. You can get them at any medical supply place.
