surgical clips

As a result of a botched appendix surgery in November of 2004 my wife
has been suffering with a great deal of pain. She went through an
adhesion surgery this past March which helped some but much of the pain
still remains.Last week she had a ct scan which included these findings:
"Right lower quadrant surgical clips are present. These may be related
to the ovary. The right ovary is not identified. There is a tiny
cystic structure on the left which may represent the ovary".
We were not aware that "surgical clips" had been left in her...is this
common practice? And if so, can the clips encourage additional adhesions
problems?
