If you are referring to a small bowel study or small bowel follow-through - it will require drinking barium. Then x-rays are taken at intervals - usually 30 minutes - to follow the progression of barium through the small intestine. If you are having some malabsorption problems in the small intestion - the test will show the areas of hyperactivity. Let us know what you find out!
