Dear Jill

Nortriptyline is an tri-cyclic anti-depressant very useful as a pain medication. One of the side effects is that it will put you to sleep. Another side effect is reduction of sex drive. You would probably need bigger doses for the pain & the sleep, I know I've been down that road. It's not a solution.

When you have pain, you use up certain neurotransmitters, the absense of which causes depression. Your lack of emotion & that feeling of flatness is clinical depression caused by the lack of serotonin, a neurotransmitter. The nortriptyline helps preserve serotonin.

I don't know what your medical coverage is like, but it sounds to me like you need a pain specialist and/or a psychiatrist (who knows medications that will help with your pain & your sleep.

Can you postpone that cruise? If not maybe the pain doctor and the shrink can get your medications adjusted in time.

Sincerely Kay
