Dear Paula,

I am a 38yr old mother of four daughters, the eldest has just had her 16th birthday.  I have great empathy with your situation and how distressed you must be about your daughters pain and the lack of help she seems to have received from the medical profession so far.

I am concerned about my eldest daughter because she is displaying the same symptoms and dealing with the same pain that I did at that age.  I have been suffering with pain for my whole life and started experiencing a new "layer of pain" as I call it when my menstrual cycle started.

I was diagnosed with endometriosis in April this year after my ovaries were removed!  All four of my children were born by c-section, so the endo coupled with multiple abdominal surgeries has been the recipe for my pain.

It is important for you to get answers for your daughters condition as soon as possible, BUT please seek multiple medical opinions and do as much research and ask as many questions as you can before making any decisions on a treatment plan for your daughter.  You have already recognized that the first thing you need to do is get pain relief for her, adhesion related pain can be very nasty, and my heart goes out to you and your daughter trying to live without pain relief.

What I would like to suggest to you is that you speak to your local pharmacist and get some sort of temporary pain relief going.  My chemist recommended nurofen and the an hour later mercindol, but I am in Australia & not sure what these drugs would be called in the USA.    These drugs I have mentioned are typical over the counter headache & pain tablets.  By combining 2 different types, you can get a pretty good result.  Nurofen has a relaxing effect and the mercidol is a very strong pain reliever that can make you a little drowsy, so this combination would be useful in helping her sleep at night.

So, just go to your usual pharmacy and ask their advice, that's what I did while I was waiting to get in to see the specialist.

Yes, I have already started to organise tests etc for my daughter to see if she has endometriosis because it is unfortunately one of those horrid things that can be passed on to our children.  I have got my story on the adhesions quilt, and would be happy to help you in any other way.  Please remember I am not a medical person, just a fellow adhesions sufferer reaching out to offer help & support to fellow sufferers.

Love and gentle hugs for you and your daughter

Jo (Australia)
