Dear Pat, the pain you are describing sounds like adhesions. I had open abdominal surgery for a hernia by my belly button June 2002, and also had mess put in. I had one hernia, and another place that was almost erupted, so they fixed both. Since then, I am now having pain by my belly button and I think it is adhesions. I also have abdominal adhesions. I would find a DR that would treat the pain with meds. Surgery of any kind can cause adhesions. I am not sure how long it takes to recover from this surgery, but it did not take me very long. I hope I answereed all your questions. You can email me or post to me any time. robin M
