Regarding the term psychosomatic illnesses, it is now called "stress-related illnesses". I have been teaching mental health nursing since 1976. I can;t remember exactly when thechange occured, maybe fifteen-20 years ago, but some doctors and lay people still use the term "pychosomatic" which tends to give an impression of "it's all in your mind", which it is not. When you are stressed, from family, financial, world, personal, or physical issues, stress hormones are released from you adrenal glands: adrenaline and cortisone, your vital signs speed up, your muscles become tense, etc. Over time, damage is done throughout your body from constantly being "on alert". mary lou

While the physical symptoms and physical illnesses need to be treated in their own right, it would be extremely unwise to ignore the impact that thoughts, attitudes, feelings and emotions had in the development of the physical illness. Those suffering from psychosomatic symptoms or illnesses need to find solutions or new coping strategies to deal with the thoughts, attitudes, feelings and emotions that contributed to their dis-ease. People who suffer from psychosomatic illnesses should not feel guilty or blame themselves for being ill, however. In most cases they have reacted to the stresses in their lives using the coping methods that came most naturally to them. There is no shame in doing that, but new ways of coping or reacting to stress can be learned and can reduce the impact of stress on the body.
