I thought the surgeon could *fix* my problem - and get the same results as...

What a strange title I have used as the subject; but when I had surgery (a laparotomy) in 1970, I went into it "blind" - expecting the surgeon to help me become pain-free. Neither my doctor nor my surgeon ever mentioned *adhesions* to me!!! I thought surgery was a simple procedure. I thought my surgeon - with his vast knowledge about the human body and surgical experience - would be able to "fix it" for me. I was WRONG!!!!! I knew very little about the human anatomy. I was actually illiterate about it - and there weren't any stores such as B.Dalton or Barnes and Noble Bookstores (prior to and including 1970)

I felt confident that by undergoing surgery, the surgeon would be able to locate the source of the pain that was preventing me from enjoying a pain-free life. I was convinced surgery would be the answer - and that the surgeon would be able to find the cause of my pain and help me become pain-free again.

When I reflect on the laparotomy I had in 1970, I now realize that I thought the surgeon could *fix* my problem (chronic pain) - and get the same results that a mechanic gets when he *fixes" cars. Little did I realize that when a surgeon performs surgery, the result of the surgery cannot be compared with the result that happens when a mechanic *fixes* a car

Bev Doucette said it so well! I want to encourage you to read her pep-talk at the following websites:
