Dearest Sandy , I had a bowel resection in June 2001 and I wind up staying longer in the hospital like 7 days. I had to stay without eating for 6 days and had an NG tube in for about 3 days. It can put you in a life threatening situation. I never had any prolonged problems from it that I know of. I did windup at the ER a week after the surgery with pain in my upper abdomen.I hada extremely high WBC like 30,000 instead of 8,000. There was a high concern about it.But it settled out by the next week. But any time anyone has adhesion surgery there is that possibility of having a bowel resection.Mine was a small bowel resection because of my sb being attahced to the peritoneal wall and to everything else. That is why my doc won't approve of me going to Germany.Good Luck to you. My doc did surgery twice since that time and has kept it a laparoscopic case. He has figured a way to keep it closed. He has made a path along with a special procedure with heated air and other things to keep it closed. He brings so many instruments in the OR I barely fit in.I asked them if they were sure they had enough room for me. They all laughed. But they told me there were also other equipment waitng on standby if needed. My doc is an adhesion specialist. Love and best wishes. Lillian
