Natural adhesions

Roughly when I was 10 years old (I'm 23 now)I
started having a severe pain in one spot on my l
eft side just below my ribcage and bad heartburn.
I had many tests to find the source and was eventually
told I had a hiatus hernia and was given medication.
I continued taking the medication for a few years and
the pains went away.
The pains then returned worse than ever at the start
of this year so I went to have it re-investigated.
I was then given exploratory surgery and the surgeon
found a very large adhesion connecting my lower bowel
to my stomach. I however only assumed that adhesions
occur AFTER surgery.
To get to the point I would like to know how it is
possible for adhesions to occur naturally and how
often does it happen?
