Kim, If an Anesthesiologist who is also a pain specialist, performs a nerve block they place the needle in areas where the nerve endings hopefully lead to the pain. I don't believe any other kind of doctor is qualified to do this procedure. I've only had anesthesiologists do it. I wouldn't trust any other type of doctor to do this. Anesthesiologist do this procedure hundreds of thousands of times and the percentage is very low that anyone could be paralyzed. I forget what percentage it is but I believe it's something like one or two percent. I've had it done but it didn't help me but a few days; however, my sister and others have gotten long periods of relief. That's something you may want to investigate and consider if pain meds don't help. I even had a morphine pump for a few years and got relief for long periods but became immune to the meds and tired of the pump being under my skin. They're smaller now but I worried that something might happen to cause more meds to shoot into my body and kill me. I wasn't happy with having it in me. There is another device that stimulates the nerve endings. I would have gotten it but I wasn't deemed a good candidate because of the location (abdominal adhesions) of my pain. It tends to work for people with back pain. For those of us with abdominal pain, I don't know of a device except for the morphine pump. Linda

I went to the pain clinic yesterday and she prescribed Ultram once a day and vicodin 3 times a day. She said if this does not work she could do a nerve block in my back- too scared to have that done. I am sending my reconds to Dr. Gerhard in PA and Dr. Semertizides in Ohio to see if either one of them would help me. From what I understand they rate adhesions from 1-5 and my doctor said mine are a 5. So I am hoping someone can still help me. I do not know how anyone can work with this pain. I am a first grade special ed teacher and it is becoming impossible to go to work.

>Hi Kim, I don't know what area you live but you'll find pain specialists are a breed of their own. Who gave your pain meds before? They require a patient to submit to a urine test to check for any illegal drugs. If you go to one that is also an Anesthesiologist, they can do trigger shots that sometimes give long lasting relief without the need for pain meds. It's important to stretch and massage the area to loosen the tightness. I found that physical therapy which included massaging, with a moist heat pad placed on afterwards felt good. Medication(s) affect each person differently. We all have to find whatever works best for us. If you don't have a Bed Buddy (moist heat pad) you'll find it really helps ease pain or at least it does for me. Be careful not to burn yourself. My entire abdominal skin is numb and I don't have any feeling, so I gave myself a 2nd degree burn.

Hopefully, the new SprayGel/SprayShield will be approved by FDA and Dr. Redan will be able to use it on his patients. It's suppose to prevent adhesions from returning; however, there are many on this site who have said their adhesions returned even after its use.
