H Natalie:

I think I do recognize you from OB/GYN. Welcome. To answer your question I will pass on to you what my gyn told me. He said the risk of adhesions forming is SMALLER during a laparoscopy (when compared to laparotomy) because the incisions are smaller and the organs are exposed to less air. He told me that adhesion problems develop for various reasons, and his examples were air exposure, incision size, and the amount that the organs have to be handled. Of course, he told me this after explaining that adhesion formation is the body's reaction to surgery.

My gyn told me this in a specific conversation regarding whether or not I should have a diagnostic laparoscopy to see if I had adhesions from a prior laparotomy. He did stress that I would probably develop more adhesions from the laparoscopy, just hopefully significantly less than from the full lap. He told me that if I had a lysis of adhesions, that I might be better after surgery, that I might be the same as I am now, or I could be worse.

I know that this is probably not much help, but I believe that my Dr. was being very honest with me. Best wishes.
